ChuangHua Tracery: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Chung-Sheng Chen and Chih-Hua Kuo's Award-Winning Furniture Set

ChuangHua Tracery, a furniture set designed by Chung-Sheng Chen and Chih-Hua Kuo, is a remarkable integration of cultural succinct structure and exquisitely sheet metal fabrication. Inspired by the cultural heritage of Tainan, an old city of Taiwan, the furniture set presents a series of cultural-fashion home furniture and decoration.

The designers were inspired by "ChuangHua", meaning the traditional Chinese tracery, a fascinating element found in every corner of the city. The furniture set is unique in its structure, manufacturing technology, and material used with cultural elements. Tracery pattern and Red in White were used as festive and auspicious images. The overall structure is given a simple, clean, and neat form through sheet metal bending.

ChuangHua Tracery stands out for its vivid reddish color set off in purely white, auspiciously engraved pattern of traditional Chinese tracery, and the use of Sheet metal bending technique that generate aesthetically simple clean and neat in structural shape. The furniture set is free from the traditional metallic image of hard, cold, and heavy, presenting a new perspective on metal furniture.

The production of the furniture set involves metal bending, welding, laser cutting, and engraving. The material used is galvanized sheet metal, and the painting is done through powder paint coating. The furniture set includes a bookshelf, a stand light, and a low stool, all designed with the same aesthetic and functional principles.

The furniture set is designed to fit for home decor, commercial space, hotel, or studio. Each piece of the furniture is good enough to be stand-alone or to be presented in a whole set which brings the utmost ambiance to the environment. When light passes through the laser cutting tracery pattern, the shadow projected onto the surrounding wall shows a glimpse of beauty.

The project was initiated by the Economic Development Bureau of Tainan City Government, aiming to transform a local sheet metal factory into a cultural creative entity. The furniture set made its first appearance in 2016 Taiwan Creative EXPO and won the Cultural Creative Award. The design is patented, with the patent held by acdesign associates International Co., Ltd. and Taiwan Innovation Metal Corporation.

The ChuangHua Tracery furniture set is a testament to the power of design in transforming traditional elements into innovative creations. It showcases the potential of design in bridging the gap between tradition and modernity, and in promoting cultural heritage in a contemporary context.
